The history of Oakville
It all started in 1793 when Dundas Street was surveyed for a military road. Then the Assembly of Upper Canada purchased all the lands between Etobicoke and Hamilton from the Mississaugas in 1805, except the land situated at the mouths of Twelve Mile Creek and Sixteen Mile Creek. British immigrants began settling in the area surrounding Dundas Street and along the shore of Lake Ontario two years later in 1807 and Oakville slowly began to develop.
Thirteen years later i n 1820, the Crown purchased the lands surrounding the previously mentioned creeks. The area, which was about 1000 acres or (4 km²), was sold at auction to William Chisholm, a immigrant from Scotland, in 1827. The land was developed by his son, Robert Kerr Chisolm and his brother-in-law, Thomas Merrick for the most part.
Oakville's original industries included timber shipment, ship-building, and farming (wheat). During the 1850s, there was an recession of the economy and the foundry, the primary industry in town, was closed. As a result, basket-making became a major industry in the town, and eventually a railway running through Oakville was constructed.
The town became industrialized eventually with the opening of a Petro-Canada refinery, and the Procor factory, but, most importantly, the Ford Motor Company plant which remains a huge job provider to this day.
In 1962 the town of Oakville merged with surrounding villages (Bronte, Sheridan, Palermo, and Trafalgar) to become the new Town of Oakville.
