Mississauga is the 6th largest city in Ontario, and is located on the shores of Lake Ontario. It's diversity and natural beauty make it a preferred destination to many.
Located close to Toronto, home to Lester B. Pearson international airport and home to the greatest concentration of major highways in the country, Mississauga is perfect to serve local, national and international travelers and markets.
When the Europeans arrived in the area during the 1600s, both Iroquois and Algonquian natives had already settled in the Credit River Valley area. One of the First Nations groups the Europeans found near the Credit River area was called the Mississaugas, a tribe who originally came from Lake Huron and by 1700 the Mississaugas had completely driven away the Iroquois.
Government officials came from York in 1805, Toronto was known as York at the time, and purchased 340 km² (84,000 acres) of the Mississauga Tract then opened the area for settlement in 1806. Various communities settled including: Clarkson, Cooksville, Dixie, Erindale, Port Credit, Sheridan, and Summerville. This region became known as the Toronto Township when the purchase was made.
A second purchase was made in 1820, and additional settlements were established including: Britannia, Barbertown, Derry West, Burnhamthorpe, Elmbank, Malton, Mount Charles, Meadowvale Village, and Streetsville. This eventually led to the displacement of the Mississaugas and, they were relocated to a reserve in the Grand River Valley near present-day Hagersville, in 1847.
In 1968, these new settlements (with the exception of Port Credit and Streetsville) joined together to form the Town of Mississauga, and in 1974, Mississauga incorporated as a City, this time including Port Credit and Streetsville.
